THE SOLAR SYSTEM

Where is the Solar System?
The Solar System is in the Milky Way Galaxy

What cab you find in the Solar System?
We can find planets, satellites (moons), asteroids, comets, the Sun and other objects.

What is the Sun?
The Sun is a star and it emits light and heat. It’s at the centre

Where is the Sun?
Is at the centre of the Solar System.

How many planets are there?
There are eight planets

What are the four inner planets?
The four inner planets are Maercury, Earth and Mars.

What are the four outer planets?
The four outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.



THE LAYERS OF THE EARTH

How many layers of the Earth can you identify from space?
You can identify three layers: The atmosphere, the hydrosphere and the geosphere.

What is the atmosphere?
The atmosphere isa ll the air that surrounds the Earth

What is the hydrosphere?
The hydrosphere is all the water found on and above Earth

What is the geosphere?
The continents make up the geopshere. It’s the hard part of the Earth



HOW THE EARTH MOVES
How many movements has the Earth?
The Earth has two movements: Rotation and revolution

What is the rotation of the Earth?
The Earth rotates on its invisible axis. It takes one day for the Earth to complete one rotation.

Why do we have day and night?
We have day and night because the Sun only shines on one half of the Earth.

What is the revolution of the Earth?
The Earth revolves around the Sun. It takes three hundred, sixty five days and six hours (365 days and 6 hours) for the Earth to complete a revolution.



THE SUN AND THE SEASONS
Why do we have seasons?
The Earth’s revolution produces the seasons.

How many seasons are there?
There are four seasons: Spring, summer, autumn and Winter.

How long is each season?
Each season is three months long



HOW THE MOON MOVES
What is the Moon?
The Moon is the only natural satellite

How many movements has the Moon?
The Moon has two movements: Rotation and revolution

How long does the Moon take to complete one rotation?
The Moon takes twenty eight (28) days to complete one revolution

How many main phases has the Moon?
The Moon has four main phases: New Moon, first quarter, full Moon and third quarter.



ORIENTATION
How many cardinal points are there?
There are four cardinal points: North, south, east and west. On maps we see: N,S, E and W

What object can you use to orientate yourself when you are lost?
You can use a compass

How do compasses work?
Compasses have a magnetic needle that always points north.

Where does the Sun rise?
The Sun rises in the East

Where does the Sun set?
The Sun sets in the west
